When local authorities went to respond to animal cruelty complaints at a Texas puppy mill in August, they found something they didn’t expect – a lone goat who was so severely neglected that her infected udder was dragging on the ground.
Her miserable life took a fortunate turn that day. The goat now called Millie was taken to the Cleveland Armory Black Beauty Ranch, a 1,300-acre animal sanctuary in Murchison, Texas. There, she was provided critical veterinary care and a home for life.
Millie has gained weight now that her body doesn’t have to work so hard fighting infection. And, says the ranch director, Diane Miller, Millie is getting back in touch with her rambunctious side.
“She’s got quite a personality that’s starting to blossom now that she feels better,” Miller said. “Goats play a lot when they are happy.”

Before Millie was treated after coming to the ranch, her severely infected udder touched the ground. Miller/HSUS | Millie’s rescue came about after a local sheriff, name, and Humane Society of the United States’ senior director of Emergency Services Scotlund Haisley went to investigate a puppy mill breeding facility in Kaufman, Texas. After the raid, the sheriff took Haisley to visit another rural breeding facility that he had concerns about. That’s where they found Millie.
Millie’s enclosure at Black Beauty Ranch is adjacent to Miller’s house there, so the goat is a constant companion.
“She’s quite a character. She follows us around the yard,” Miller says. “She wants to come in the house. She head-butts the front door, wanting to come in!”
